Each character holds certain individual motivations that drive them to change parts of their personality and how they view certain aspects in their life. Two characters in which change becomes evident in are Gilbert Grape and his mother, Bonnie Grape.

He works at a local grocery store to provide for the family, he takes care of his younger brother, Arnie, all by himself, and he helps to take care of his obese mother. Gilbert is motivated by responsibility. He feels obligated at the beginning of the movie because it is as if everyone else in his family is helpless. By the end of the movie Gilbert realizes how much he means to his mother and how much his family really means to him.

He respects his mother more at the end of the movie after he realizes what she went through with his father leaving. He wants to make his mother happy. Mama Grape is depressed and is embarrassed of what she has become. However, Mama Grape is motivations change because of her children. When Arnie is put in jail she wants to protect her child.

Protecting her child and bringing him home is the only think that has gotten her to leave the house and go into public for the past seven years.

Mama Grape also becomes motivated at the end of the movie to begin to change her life style. Smile costs nothing, but gives everything; kindness, appreciation, happiness and most of all love. Smile, a facial expression characterized by an upward curving of the corners of the mouth and indicating pleasure and amusement. There are many meanings of Oscar Wilde, an English writer, is well-known for his fairy tales.

There are certain characteristics that a caregiver for a person with a disability must hold, and if you lack any of those characteristics, you will most likely not be able to handle the stress of caring for a person or child who is disabled. This was covered in another part of my paper, but it applies here as well.

Although there are many different kinds of disabilities out there, the disabilities that Arnie has do not make him crazy. He is just a typical teenage boy who needs a little more help than others at times. Last but not least, the last take away message from the movie is that all persons with disabilities constantly misbehave and need to be under constant 24 hour supervision. This is not true in any sense of the word. There any many independent individuals who have disabilities who have their own apartments, have jobs, pay their own bills, and do not need any help or supervision whatsoever.

Just because Arnie needs to be watched closely so he does not get into trouble does not mean that every single individual with a disability needs to be supervised with a close eye at all times. Every person and every disability is unique, and every person deals with their disability in a unique way. Some individuals with disabilities are able to go out and live completely independent lives, where others may need to live with a parent, caregiver, or roommate forever.

It just depends solely on the individual. For one, the reality of the family and community setting where the movie took place. Also, the acting of DiCaprio as Arnie who was a teenager with developmental disabilities was exceptionally realistic. In addition, the reactions that the people in the community had to Arnie and his sometimes impulsive and irrational behaviors were very similar to the reactions people would have to an individual with disabilities out in the community today.

I believe that it made many people realize that it is normal for families to keep and care for their child whether it has a disability or not. Lastly, the movie also sent out a very positive and important message to viewers that could make many people feel more comfortable with people who care for individuals with disabilities, individuals with disabilities themselves, and giving the people who care for such individuals more credit for the hard work that they do. Even though, that is the way it actually is at times, it is still unnecessary to treat anyone, disabled or not, disrespectfully and rudely.

Throughout the movie, there were several scenarios where Arnie was treated with much disrespect. Another dislike of the movie was the part of the movie where Gilbert was so frustrated with everything in his life, and had all of his emotions built up and he took it all out on Arnie and he hit him.

Although, everyone gets angry at times, it is never acceptable to hit someone else, especially someone like Arnie who is unable of properly defending themselves.

It may have been a very honest and true situation to see a family member with a child or sibling with a disability struggle through; there are plenty of other ways that Gilbert could have effectively expressed his emotions without hitting Arnie. He was under a lot of stress from the rest of his family, but that was no reason for him to take it out on Arnie, when it was his mother and other siblings that were causing all of his built up frustration and anger.

Some of the changes that would have been ideal to the movie would to have been given the opportunity to see how Arnie performed and acted during school. It was very apparent how he acted outside of school and how he acted while around Gilbert and his other siblings, but it would have been interesting to see how he acted around his peers and other individuals who are like him. Amy and Ellen were always too busy to care for Arnie, so all of the responsibility was always dumped completely onto Gilbert.

Although he was kind of sad to hear this news, he was glad because it meant that he did not have to be a part of that relationship anymore.

With this burden now gone he was able to spend more time with Becky whom he really did love. Emotionally the biggest event that happened to Gilbert was when his mother Bonnie died. Although Gilbert wasn't that close to her he realized how much he loved her once she was gone.

To avoid causing his mother embarrassment by everyone seeing her being brought out from the house by a crane, because of her obesity, Gilbert decides that they are all going to burn down the house with Bonnie inside.

This is an extremely emotional time for them all. Despite the sadness and other feelings, for Gilbert it symbolizes a new start because two of his main burdens are now gone, and he no longer has to try and keep a house that is about to fall over, standing. Now that there is no reason to stay in Endora Amy and Ellen, Gilberts sisters, decide to leave. Amy manages to get a job at a bakery somewhere, while Ellen continues her education at a different school.

So, with just Arnie and Gilbert they both decide to join up with Becky and her Grandmother and travel around the country with the other campers who move from park to park.

By doing this it was like a new beginning for Gilbert as he left behind all the pressures and his former life in Endora. Although the film begins and ends with Gilbert and Arnie waiting for the campers, Gilbert is very changed by the end. He is not only a happier person but his whole view on life has changed greatly. He has gone from always thinking about what other people want to wanting things for himself.

Gilbert has gone through a lot of suffering and stress, but in the end it makes him a better person. You can order a custom essay on Gilbert Grape now! Posted by Webmaster at 2:
