Being honest is better than people being killed over false accusations. Foil characters in a story is a technique used to contrast characters. In the play Abigail Williams portrays herself as an innocent girl being afflicted by the devil. John Proctor realizes the only way to prove Abigail is a liar and dishonest is to confess.

So he confesses to to the court; Abigail denies this making Danforth confused. Elizabeth is an honest woman because an honest woman would never lie. In her life she has never lied…my wife cannot lie III, Abigail Williams portrays a dishonest harlot.

Everyone is realizing Abigail is a dishonest harlot and cannot be trusted. In this type of society there is no difference between committing a sin and committing a crime.

This environment uncovers an assortment of different hidden thoughts and attitudes. In a world such as this, Miller makes it clear that there is no flexibility in what is considered to be an acceptable form of conduct. He carefully crafts a world where everything is considered black or white with no possible room for deviation. It is this inflexible logic that leads to the Salem Witch Trials, which turn out to be the ultimate demonstration of intolerance in any society.

To find oneself accused of being against the state and therefore against God is to see a future where hanging is the only possible outcome. Even the smallest of infractions is met with such severe punishment, elimination. This intolerance is found in several forms in The Crucible. There is automatic intolerance found when some people have been accused of witchcraft. In the case of Tituba for example, she is excluded from the entire community.

However there is also intolerance seen even between people who appear to have equal footing as in the case of the girls themselves. When he learns that his confession will be made public, he elects the scaffold with the others who refuse to compromise their consciences and their souls.

His good name is all he has to leave his sons. The drama is based upon contemporary sources noted within the text but omitted in performance, as are explanations of the political significance of witch hunts, past and present. On stage, it is the compelling human tragedy that has made the play an American classic.
